Visual effects or VFX are the process by which imagery is created and manipulated outside the context of live action shot. Visual effects involve inclusion of live action scenes and computer generated imagery which have a very realistic look. In modern film making world VFX technology is used to make films and the outcome is appreciated by audiences worldwide. Making traditional sets for films are more expensive and time consuming than in VFX. If anything goes wrong in real set making it has to be discarded and a new set has to be made which will raise the cost of the film, but in VFX manipulation is possible plus it will not raise the budget alarmingly.
In making a VFX film, a VFX producer should be the first requirement who will go through the script and give a rough budget and schedule, and point out possible problems you might have. During the pre-production stage, the VFX team will work on R&D, VFX concept design and 3D pre-visualization. The visual effect supervisor has to work with the director of the film for the vfx shot to be designed. The VFX supervisor’s experience and the directors creativity is combined keeping in focus the budget and the schedule of the film. They decide jointly how and when to shot the scenes, what props need to be prepared and do some effect testing to make sure that ideas are possible and work according to the need of the film. The VFX supervisor will be on set during filming to make sure the green screen is set right with proper light. During shooting data such as camera lens, camera angle, clean plate, HDRI etc. are collected and kept in record which helps a lot in post VFX process. The team at this stage creates 3D models or start working on some CG shots.
After the editing of the film is finished, the VFX team get really busy and has their important role to play. They select the shots that need VFX are scanned, organised and sent to the VFX studio. 3D items like vehicles, creatures, environment with matt painting or 3D goes through modelling, texturing, rigging, lighting, animating and rendering. Most plate elements are tracked and keyed out of the green screen. Some backgrounds are replaced with matt painting. At this final stage compositors get all elements from 3D render, matt paintings and keyed plates and do the final compositing, necessary plate clean up and shooting errors are also fixed. The final result is a VFX film which we enjoy viewing. People interested in learning VFX and its usage to choose it as his carrier may join njoyarts in Laxmi Nagar, New Delhi.
